Harlem, Manhattan: Mohamed Bah, a 28-year-old Manhattan Community College student from West Africa, was attacked and killed by Emergency Services Unit Officers after his mother called 911 for an ambulance and the NYPD came instead. Mohamed's mother Hawa Bah had recently traveled to New York from Guinea to care for her son after becoming concerned about his psychological and physical health. When officers arrived on the scene, they ordered Mrs. Bah outside, refused to let her speak with her son, called for back up, entered Mohamed's room against his will and shot and killed him. A Manhattan grand jury failed to indict those responsible. Mohamed's family is demanding a federal civil rights investigation, changes to NYPD protocol for interacting with those with psychological disabilities, and an end to police violence.
