Bushwick, Brooklyn: Rexford, a 22-year-old Dominican-Guyanese man born with a psychological disability, was shot and killed by NYPD officers in front of his family's home. Police claim to have been responding to a call from Rexford’s landlord. They also claim officers shot Rexford when he threatened them with a knife. However, family members say Dasrath was just holding a kitchen knife he used to eat with, and community witnesses say there was no need for police to shoot him. Rexford’s death has re- affirmed the need for the NYPD to change the way it treats those with psychological disabilities and special needs. No grand jury has been convened and no officers have been charged in this case.
Rexford's mother Felicia Dasrath, tia Bethanya Cabrera & their family have begun a fight for justice for Rexford. To join them in their struggle for justice, contact the Justice Committee.
