20th Annual Nicholas Heyward Jr Day of Remembrance

Nicholas Naquan Heyward, Jr. was a 13-year-old honor student playing cops and robbers in a stairwell in Gowanus Houses when a housing police officer shot and killed him 20 years ago. The cop who killed him was exonerated by the District Attorney and never faced any charges.

Please join Nicholas Jr.'s family and friends on Saturday, August 23rd for the 20th Annual Day of Remembrance to mark his birthday in the park that was named after him.

All are invited to this community gathering for:
- food
- basketball games
- arts & crafts
- face painting
- Ha!Ha! the Clown
- exchanging toy guns for gifts
- voter registration

- Performances by artists including:
   * Ngoma 
   * Aidge
   * spiritchild
   * youth from the Hip Hop Summer Camp for Social Justice

- Special guests, such as families of residents of Boerum Hill/Gowanus who died at the hands of law enforcement, including:
