On Thursday, January 17th, Justice Committee will be co-sponsoring a town hall event about discriminatory policing with Councilperson Melissa Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito, Bronx Defender, & Picture the Homeless. At “East Harlem Stand Up!”, community members will be encouraged to speak out against the NYPD’s Stop & Frisk policy, and the program will also include Know Your Rights training and a discussion of the Community Safety Act police reform laws.

Nicholas Naquan Heyward, Jr. was a 13-year-old honor student playing cops and robbers in a stairwell in Gowanus Houses when a housing police officer shot and killed him 20 years ago. The cop who killed him was exonerated by the District Attorney and never faced any charges.

Please join Nicholas Jr.'s family and friends on Saturday, August 23rd for the 20th Annual Day of Remembrance to mark his birthday in the park that was named after him.
