On November 20th, NYPD rookie Officer Peter Liang shot and killed Akai Gurley, an unarmed, Black, 28-year old father, while conducting a vertical patrol in the Louis H. Pink Houses in East New York. Akai was with his girlfriend, who lives at the Pink Houses, and had just entered the stairwell to return to her apartment after akai had his hair done ata neighbor's place. They had done nothing at all wrong, Officer Liang simply fired into the stairwell from the floor above them, after hearing a noise in the stairwell.

With cell phones and security cameras able capture our every move it seems like we are always being watched. The same goes for police: dash cams and body cameras record their daily interactions with the community. It’s something we are used to, but not the cops. 

“While the police department loves to videotape the rest of us, they don’t necessarily love being videotaped themselves,” said Donna Lieberman, Executive Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union.

North Bronx: Ramarley Graham, an 18-year-old youth of Jamaican descent, was shot and killed by NYPD Officer Richard Haste in the bathroom of his home in front of his grandmother and 6-year-old brother. This occurred after NYPD officers followed Ramarley home and busted into the house without a warrant. Ramarley was unarmed.
