Timur Person

Bronx: Timur Person, a 19 year old Black man, was shot four times in the chest and once in the neck by plain-clothes detectives. Timur was killed at close range his hands were in the air and he was lying face-up on the floor. Although Timur was armed, witnesses say he was trying to surrender when he was shot.

Sean Bell

Jamaica, Queens: On the eve of his wedding Sean Bell, a 23-year-old Black man, and his two friends Trent Benefield and Joseph Guzman were shot at a total of 50 times by plain-clothed NYPD officers, as they left his bachelor party. Sean was killed and Trent and Joseph were injured. As NYC rose up in protest, a grand jury was convened and the officers involved went to trial but were acquitted of all charges.

Malcolm Ferguson

Soundview, Bronx: Malcolm Ferguson, a 23-year-old Black man, was unarmed when he was killed at point-blank range by undercover police officer Louis Rivera. Only 5 days before his death, Malcolm was arrested for protesting the acquittal of the four cops who murdered Amadou Diallo. A grand jury has never been convened in this case and no officers were ever charged.

Amadou Diallo

Soundview, Bronx: Amadou Diallo, a 23-year-old Guinean immigrant, was killed outside his apartment by four NYPD plain-clothed officers; Sean Carroll, Richard Murphy, Edward McMellon and Kenneth Boss, after supposedly mistaking Amadou's wallet for a gun. The cops fired a total of 41 shots, 19 of which struck Amadou. The killing gained national attention and sparked massive protests throughout NYC.

Yong Xin Huang

Friday, March 24, 1995
Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn: Yong Xin Huang, a 16-year-old Chinese American teenager, was playing in a friend’s driveway when he was shot and killed by NYPD. Police were called by a neighbor who stated that the kids were playing with a gun, which turned out to be a pellet gun. The police claim that what happened next was a struggle between 5’3′′, 115lb Yong Xin and the 6′, 200+ lb officer Steven Mizrahi, and that Mizrahi’s gun went off by accident, shooting and killing Yong Xin. However, witnesses say there was no struggle and that Mizrahi pushed Yong Xin through a glass door, and then shot him.

Anthony Rosario & Hilton Vega

Thursday, January 12, 1995
Morris Heights, Bronx: Cousins Anthony and Hilton, both young Puerto Rican men (18 and 22-years-old, respectively), were killed by two NYPD detectives, Patrick Brosnan and James Crowe. Anthony and Hilton were shot a combined 14 times in the back while laying face down, with the cops standing right above them. No grand jury was ever convened and the officers involved were never charged.

Anthony Baez

Cameron Place, Bronx: Anthony Baez, a 29-year-old Puerto Rican man, was killed after his football hit a police car during a game of catch with his brothers. NYPD Officer Francis Livoti ordered them to go home, but the brothers elected to continue playing catch in the opposition direction. Livoti attempted to arrest Anthony's brother David for disorderly conduct. When Anthony protested his brother's arrest, Livoti and three other officers jumped on him, claiming it took four of them to hold Anthony down. Against NYPD protocol, Livoti placed Anthony in a chokehold. He lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead.

Nicholas Naquan Heyward, Jr.

Boerum Hill, Brooklyn: Nicholas, a 13-year-old Black middle school honor student, was killed by NYC housing cop Brian George in the Gowanus Houses complex where he lived with his parents and younger brother. Nicholas and his friends were playing a cops and robbers in the stairwell, using plastic toy guns with bright orange handles and tips. When the officer came upon them, Nicholas dropped his toy gun, saying "We're only playing, we're only playing," but George shot him in the stomach.
